Student and teacher volunteers, along with members of the Chantry Island Cham-bettes, sat amongst boxes and boxes of donated food and hygiene products collected at the first ever Saugeen Shares Food Drive run by the Saugeen District Senior School (SDSS) December 7.

Organizer Dan Weigand declared the event a resounding success with 110 volunteer drivers scouring all areas in Saugeen Shores looking for donations for the local Salvation Army Food Bank. Another 70 or so volunteers were stationed at SDSS to accept drop-off donations and sort the multitudes of perishable food and hygeine streaming in.

Weigand explained the divide and conquer method that was used to hit almost every household in Saugeen Shores in a matter of hours. The community was split into 28 regions and assigned to different collectors. Residents who left labeled bags outside made pickup much more efficient, noted Weigand.

“Some areas were missed, but other volunteers went back out to cover, staying much longer than intended,” praised Weigand.

The Chantry Island Cham-bettes kept volunteers fuelled with a hot lunch served at the school.

Local organizations that supported the food drive included Chantry Island Cham-bettes, The Salvation Army, the Power Worker’s Union, Rowland’s Independent, Giant Tiger, and Walmart.

Students Perform Well on Test
4 Dec 2019--The Sun Times (Owen Sound)--The Canadian Press

A new report shows Canadian students are performing as well, if not better, than their American, Australian and British peers even though the country spends less per student on education. The latest results of the Programme for International Student Assessment, released Tuesday, suggest that after a certain spending threshold, there is almost no relationship between the amount invested in education and student performance.

The program, administered by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and  Development to its member countries, says that threshold is US$50,000 per student. It says the U.S., Australia and the U.K. all spend more than double that amount, but students there scored no better in last year’s test than those in Canada, Ireland and New Zealand, which spend between 10 and 30 per cent less.
